North of the Annex and South of Forest Hill, South Hill is a lesser-known residential neighbourhood with its own unmistakable charm. Its proximity to Toronto’s trendiest areas makes it ideal for younger families, though home prices can rival those of Rosedale or Forest Hill.
Many houses and elegant apartment buildings offer tremendous views of Toronto. Some showcase the Nordheimer Ravine, which lies along the west side of the neighbourhood. Toward the south and along Davenport Road, are lots of great restaurants and bars, from the intimate and elite Scaramouche Restaurant to so-hip-it-hurts cafe Ezra’s Pound where they proudly grind their own (responsibly grown and delicious) coffee beans. A range of shops also sit along Davenport, from flower shops to grocery stores.
Families can choose from a number of prestigious neighbourhood schools, including Branksome Hall. The Nordheimer Ravine offers a beautiful abundance of trails and views for dog-walkers and joggers alike. There’s also lots of water here for those who want a little oasis in the city, including the tranquil Glen Edith Pond and Castle Frank stream, and the Glen Edyth Wetland and Roycroft Wetland are some of Toronto’s most vital natural conservation sites. Situated toward the Northwest part of the neighbourhood, Winston Churchill Park provides hours of activities for families, from multiple tennis courts to wading pools.
