Ribfest Toronto

It's hard to miss the green grass and blossoms and above-20 temperatures: finally, it's really spring in Toronto. For us, though, this is just a prelude to early summer, which is one of the best times of year in the city. Every single day brings something new and fun and sometimes a little bit wacky. Here are our anticipatory picks.

We Have the Best Restos! If there's one thing Toronto does well, it's food culture. We've got one of the best and most diverse food cultures in the world (with Scarborough even pipped by The Economist as the world's best ethnic food suburb), from haute foodie hotspots like Bar Isabel and La Societe to uber-cool downtown boites like Hawker Bar and on-trend experiments in food like Junked Food Co, which takes junk food to the next level. Right now, we're in love with the new Annette Food Market in the Junction... and if you need a patio to sit and sip in the sunshine, just go next door to The Good Neighbour, their sister coffee shop.

Food Fest Madness! It's the limited-run festivals and events that really make Toronto's food culture. Take the Toronto Taste event on June 7 in support of Second Harvest Food Bank, where a $250 ticket gets you new and interesting dishes  from 50 of the hottest chefs in the city. Or if comfort food is your thing, there's the Mac n' Cheese Festival from June 5-7 in Liberty Park: admission is free, but bring plenty of cash for plenty of mac. There's also the classic annual Toronto Ribfest over Canada Day Weekend, if your love for ribs is greater than your dislike of crowds.

Toronto is Music Central! Several times every summer, Toronto becomes a global destination for music fans. Mega-music-fests have become a trend in the past few years, and Toronto is a great destination. First up is downtown Toronto's best music fest, Field Trip at Fort York and Garrison Common on June 6 and 7, with indie acts like the Arkells, Alabama Shakes and Father John Misty. For the summer's greatest draw, though, you'll have to head a bit past Barrie to Canada's answer to Glastonbury: WayHome in Oro-Medonte. Major music stars like Sam Smith, the Decemberists, Hozier and the legendary Neil Young will be there.
